Asus Zenfone 8 may be launched as Asus 8Z due to branding lawsuit against the company

Asus launched the Asus Zenfone 8 Series and Zenfone 8 Flip globally earlier this week. Asus Zenfone 8 Series devices are expected to be launched in India, but the devices may carry a different surname in the country than the global market. For the unaware, due to a branding lawsuit against the company in 2019, the brand launched the Asus Zenfone 6 in India as the Asus 6Z. The brand does not appear to have resolved the branding lawsuit, and as a result, Asus may launch the Asus Zenfone 8 in India as the Asus 8Z, at least as indicated by the Google Play supported device listings.

Recently the Indian version of Asus Zenfone 8 with Asus_I006D model number appeared in the list of Google Play supported devices. The listing also revealed that the Asus 8Z moniker could be carried in the smartphone market. Sudhanshu Ambhore took to Twitter to share the development.

The ASUS ZenFone 8 Indian version appears on Google Play’s supported device list certification with the “ASUS 8Z” moniker.

Asus 8Z: specifications and features

The smartphone has a 5.9-inch FHD + E4 AMOLED display made by Samsung. In terms of peak brightness, the display can go up to 1100 nits, and offers a 120HZ refresh rate. The smartphone offers an edge-to-edge display with a small punch-hole notch at the top-left corner.

The device is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 SoC, built on a 5nm manufacturing process. Whereas, graphics duties are handled by an integrated Adreno 660 GPU. The phone has 128GB / 256GB UFS 3.1 storage with 6GB / 8GB / 16GB LPDDR5. The smartphone boots Android 11 based ZenUI 8.

In terms of optics, the device offers 64MP dual rear cameras with an LED flash. The primary 64MP Sony IMX686 sensor is paired with a 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens. On the front, the smartphone has a 12MP shooter for selfies and video calls.

Asus 8Z has a 4000mAh battery unit with 30W fast charging. It has a USB Type-C port for charging and data transfer. The smartphone has two speakers, three microphones and has OZO audio technology. The Zenfone 8 also gets an IP68 rating, which makes it water and dust-resistant. Connectivity options include dual-SIM support, 5G, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth v5.2, GPS, a 3.5mm audio jack. Its dimensions are 148 × 68.5 × 8.9 millimeters and weighing 169 grams.
